Jack Douglas is the brilliant, elusive shadow that haunts and helps Tom Douglas in equal measure. Across the series, he transforms from a tragic memory into a living "digital ghost," forcing Tom to constantly navigate the line between his duty as a cop and his loyalty to a brother who plays by a very different set of rules.
Here is the evolution of Jack Douglas across the series:
The Legend and the Legacy
In Only the Innocent and The Back Road, Jack is strictly a ghost. Believed to have died in a freak speedboat accident years earlier, he is remembered by Tom as a reckless, wild-haired genius. His death left Tom independently wealthy, a fact that initially makes Tom uncomfortable as he tries to fit into his new life in London. During this time, Jack’s "Black Hat" past as a hacker is treated as a piece of family history, with Tom recalling how Jack built a computer security empire on the back of his ability to find – and exploit – vulnerabilities in corporate systems.
The "Resurrection" and the Truth
The mystery of Jack’s "death" begins to unravel in Sleep Tight when Tom’s house is burgled by someone looking for Jack’s papers, and a secret Swiss bank account worth over four million pounds is discovered. While Tom suspects there’s more to Jack’s story, the truth is officially revealed in Stranger Child. Jack surfaces in the shadows under the alias "Blake," working as a high-level police informant. He reveals that he faked his death to save Tom’s family and his fiancé Emma from the ruthless organised crime boss Guy Bentley. In a pulse-pounding conclusion, Jack gets his revenge on Bentley before vanishing again into the night as the self-proclaimed "Black Hat".
The Shadow Ally
In the subsequent books, Jack operates as a secret weapon for Tom. In Come a Little Closer, he takes a massive risk by appearing in person at Tom’s house, sporting a beard and the alias Pete Johnson. He uses his "planet-sized brain" to hack into records to help Tom find the missing Hannah Gardner. This period marks a shift where Jack begins living off-grid in North Wales with Emma (now using the alias Clare) and the children, communicating with Tom through "breadcrumbs" left in folders on Tom's personal laptop. By Right Behind You, Jack is even feeding Tom intel about the murder of their old enemy, Finn McGuinness, and the emergence of a dangerous new "recruiter" in the criminal underworld.
The Venice Heist and the Final Move
The stakes become personal for Jack once again in the later books. After word spreads that he is still alive (No More Lies), he is forced to move his family further underground. The climax of his journey takes place in Whatever It Takes, when his daughter Ava is kidnapped by a gang linked to the 'Ndrangheta. Operating as "Ethan Blake," Jack p a sophisticated art heist plans sophisticated heist to save her.
Finally, Jack promises to go "legit" by developing technology to prevent crime, settling his family outside of Tom's police jurisdiction so they can be close without Tom being forced to "lock him up" for his past sins.
